I never thought that I would be writing a post about hair…
But to be honest, men rarely talk about their appearances and physical looks (except for maybe their bodies and fitness-goals). Still, having a good overall physical appearance isn’t too difficult to accomplish – and if you finally decide to give it some effort, you might as well make it count.
Your hair is one of your key features that can easily boost or worsen your overall appearance. Now, it’s really so easy for us guys to manage our hair, and so simple to make it – and keep it – looking fresh and attractive. So, I’ll give you my top 5 tips that you can apply today to make sure your hair always looks incredible!
1. While it’s wet
If you’re serious about your style, you already know that you should be using a hair-styling cream (I use this one: it’s easy to apply, has a very strong hold, and smells absolutely AMAZING). But when and how you style your hair can mean the difference between rocking the natural but stylish look or having wet and greasy looking hair…
To make sure I’m happy with my hair, I always style my hair right after taking my morning shower. This way my hair is still wet when I apply the styling cream. Afterwards, I just use a comb while blowing my hair completely dry with a hair dryer. I’ve noticed that by applying the cream when my hair is still wet, then blowing it dry while combing it how I want, I get a much more natural – and stylish – look, which lasts way longer too!
2. Double down
This story happened a few years ago…
I’m sitting in a chair, scrolling through my phone when I hear my name being called. I get up, and introduce myself to my new hairdresser. I’m Bianca – she says with a huge smile. Bianca was a petite girl – maybe 3-4 years older than me – with long blonde wavy hair, blue eyes, and a really talkative personality. So, as she washes my hair – gently rubbing the fruity scented shampoo on my head – we start having small-talk immediately. Our topic? Weirdly enough, hair.
Now, I would have forgotten this story (not much of a story so far…) completely, if it weren’t for one little thing Bianca mentioned about hair –something that came as a total shock to me at the time. She told me that whenever I wash my hair, I should wash with shampoo twice in a single session. Even better, I should leave the shampoo on both times for a few minutes. It’s just healthier, and you’ll look a lot better too. – she said.
Now, I’m not sure about the healthier part. But after following her precise instructions out of curiosity, I actually felt that my hair was a lot cleaner and softer, my scalp was somehow also feeling better, and I was feeling pretty fresh overall. By washing twice, you’ll remove dirt, grease, sweat, and left-over hair-styling cream much more effectively, allowing your hair and your scalp to breath, making you look – and feel – better overall!
3. Keep it fresh
Whenever I see hairs growing on the back of my neck – below my normal hairline – or I feel my hair touching my ears (although not a problem with my current haircut), I know that it’s time to get a fresh haircut. This means I pay a visit to my hairdresser every 2-3 weeks; usually no big changes, just freshening up.
Still, there are times when I’m too busy to get a haircut; or I have to cancel my appointment; or maybe I have an event or a party the day before my appointment, and I want to look as fresh as possible…
These are the times when I take a small hand-held mirror, and a super high quality trimmer, and take matters into my own hands. I’m not a hairdresser, and I definitely don’t want to risk ruining my own hair. But cutting the little hairs on the back of your neck (with the help of a mirror), and trimming tightly around the ears isn’t rocket-science.
This little trick can make your haircut stay fresh for another 1-2 weeks. But even if you do decide to freshen up your own haircut, remember: you should be visiting a hairdresser at least once a month to make small adjustments to your haircut to make sure you always look your best!
4. Go bald!
Most men start going bald at some point. The luckier ones get to keep most of their hair till old age, but I also know a guy in his early 20s who’s already balding!
Almost everyone tries so hard to maintain the appearance of youth by getting “normal” haircuts, trying to cover up the bald-spots, or using mystical serums and potions that promise to grow their hair back overnight. Some of these techniques may work to some extent, to keep the illusion alive for just a little longer… But it just looks stupid: having bald-spots or combing your hair in a specific way for cover – I mean, come on, seriously?
Instead, if you start balding, just do yourself a favor and get rid of all your hair! It’s not unattractive, nor is it ugly to be bald – in fact, some of the most badass celebrities are bald: The Rock, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, or even Brandon Carter for example.
Now, to make sure you completely own the bald look, you’ll want to get in decent shape too – but either way, if you’re losing your hair, then going completely bald is way better than any of the alternatives.
Most of us guys have relatively short hair. This means that whatever haircut we get, our hair will grow back in a few weeks. So, we can easily undo any mistake that has been made, or aim for a totally new style in a few weeks when we get our next haircut.
This means that there really is very little risk in experimenting with your hairstyle. The absolute worst that can happen is that you end up having a few weeks of bad hair-days (but if it really is that bad, you can get a new haircut the next day…). Still, most guys get the same old boring and average haircut every single time until they finally go bald. They deny themselves of all the potential benefits of experimenting a little to find what works best for them – despite being such a low-risk thing to do!
Now, I’ve already talked about why you should be experimenting with your style; and your haircut is no exception! Have the confidence to change your hairstyle every once in a while! Always go for the look you want the most, regardless of whether it’s considered unordinary, unique, or even extreme. This way, you’ll not only feel much better about yourself, but you’ll also gain confidence by stepping out of your comfort-zone and going after the look you think is best!
